GOLDEN EAGLE When is it here? All year round
How easy is it to see? Very difficult. Golden eagles are extremely shy birds, and prefer the remoter parts of the Trail. They’re often soaring high overhead as well, which can make identification difficult.
How big is it? Large
What colour is it? Males and females are a golden brown colour all over, hence the name! They have noticeable ‘fingers’ on their wing tips when soaring.
What might I confuse it with? Buzzards, which are nicknamed the tourists’ eagle! You are very unlikely to see a golden eagle near a populated area, and you won’t see them perching at the side of the road like a buzzard. They’re also much larger.
Where are they? To the north and west of the Trail, particularly around Ben Venue and Glen Finglas
What are they normally doing? Golden eagles are classically spotted soaring high overhead looking for prey, sometimes in pairs. They can sometimes be spotted perched on rocks or high trees. |
