SPARROWHAWK
When is it here? All year round
How easy is it to see? They can be surprisingly difficult! Although they’re reasonably common around the Trail, they don’t hang about for long.
How big is it? Small - medium
What colour is it? Males have a grey back and orange/white underparts. Females are brown on top and are white with dark bars underneath.
What might I confuse it with? Because of its size and behaviour, you shouldn’t confuse it with anything.
Where are they? All over the Trail, but most commonly where there are areas of woodland and/or hedgerows.
What are they normally doing? Sparrowhawks hunt by dashing after their prey, and they’re very quick. You might see one zipping across the road and over a hedge, or on the edge of woodland. If you see one flying in silhouette, their tails appear quite long.
When flying they have a very distinctive fast flap-flap-glide flight, so look out for this.
